Summary of Project:
“Surface Expressions is a study of the man-made tourist landscapes of Wairakei. Looking backward in time, Wairakei was a victorian-era geothermal tourist destination. In the late 1950s a geothermal power station was built in the area and the resultant landscape became an icon of modern industry. Extraction at Wairakei altered the underlying geothermal system, causing the destruction of existing features such as the craters of Karapiti. Today, Wairakei is still home to geothermal tourist attractions in the form of the geothermal power station borefield, the Craters of the Moon walk (Karapiti) and Wairakei Terraces. The latter is a manmade structure comprised of silica terraces and a geyser that uses heated water from the adjacent power station. The Terraces pay homage to the extinct scenic attractions of the region.”
