Summary of Project:
“The images in this book document historical displays in museums but they are also, in themselves, a piece of history because the work was completed a decade ago.
Looking at the images with fresh eyes, I am immediately reminded of the many beautiful ‘local historical society’ museums I visited in the eastern states of Australia and of the dedicated volunteers that laboured to keep these lovely, little (dusty) institutions alive.
Of course, happy memories are tinged with some of the pathos that inevitably seems to be involved in any historical imagining. A large number of these museums no longer exist and sadly,, that is largely due to the fact that many of the volunteer staff were senior citizens who have since disappeared into Deaths dateless night. More than ever, the images look to me like ‘film stills’ from a movie that takes the sad loss of things much beloved as its central theme.”
